29th September 23
On Wednesday 27th September, the Gower School primary children were gathered in a special assembly for an incredible surprise—a visit by a UK pop singer Mae Muller!
Mae Muller represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Liverpool with her feel-good entry ‘I Wrote a Song’, which later reached the top 10 of the UK Singles charts.
The singer’s surprise visit left the children in delight and awe as she performed an acoustic version of her Eurovision song. Before her performance, Miss Muller answered some questions from our Head Boy, Head Girl and two Music Captains.
Their interview was very comprehensive, and included questions like ‘What are the best and worst parts of being a singer?’, ‘How did it feel not to win, and how did you bring yourself back up when you felt down?’ and even broader questions like ‘How do you make an album?’ The children were impressive, and their great behaviour and good manners were commented on by our guest.
Mae encouraged the children to believe in themselves, and to focus on their own individual growth and journey, instead of comparing themselves to others. After the interview, Miss Blackburn organised a selfie with the entire school, before Mae performed her Eurovision song accompanied by acoustic guitarist Aaron Forbes – it was lovely to hear the children singing along with her. A film of her performance can be watched on our official school Youtube channel.
As a big proponent of music and arts education for children, Miss Gowers tries to showcase a live musical performance—either in school or by attending live concerts such as the London Symphony Orchestra—at least once a term. As a result, over 60% of the school’s pupils take extra-curricular music lessons in guitar, piano, violin, cello, recorder, ukulele and singing.
