PSHEE & Citizenship

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education and Citizenship is embedded in our curriculum at The Gower School. We believe we have a responsibility to ensure that the information our children receive is grounded in the context of accepted values, based on sound moral principles.

PSHEE is a fun, exciting and essential element to all of the teaching and learning that takes place here. This important and thought provoking subject is at the core of enhancing personal development and well-being and establishing a safe learning environment for all children. We believe this enables them to learn more effectively.

We promote the use of good manners and social skills and children are encouraged to think openly about the world that they live in and their contribution to their local community.

Children undertake many life-skills activities which have both direct and indirect aims, such as refining hand muscles for writing, extending concentration or working from left to right in reading and writing.

Our Special Helper system offers each child the opportunity to help their teacher and enjoy an extra special day at school. Activities such as bringing in a favourite CD, setting up the snack area, reading to younger children, taking the register and running errands all contribute to the growth of self-esteem and independence.

Each class has a separate weekly PSHEE lesson and the topics covered include:

  • Friendships
  • Conflict resolution including using the Peace table and Worry dolls
  • Food and nutrition
  • Well-being and emotional health
  • Caring for the environment
  • Puberty

Children often share what they have learnt through displays and class assemblies.
