TGS Claims Second in National Maths Competition at Oxford University

10th July 23

On Monday 3rd July four TGS children from Forms 5 and 6 travelled to Oxford University to compete in the National Inter-School Quiz Mathematics Championships. They had previously competed in two qualifying rounds of competition throughout the Summer Term, where they went head-to-head with 38 of the top independent and state primary schools from around the country in maths.

During the competition, the four children were required to calculate maths questions with both speed and accuracy over several rounds of increasing difficulty. Live rankings were displayed after each set, and after several rounds of intense arithmetic and lightning-quick calculations, The Gower School team placed second overall with 1365 points. They were the top independent school in the nationwide competition and received a trophy and certificate as a reward. This was the first year our school has participated in the competition.

Principal Miss Emma Gowers, was ecstatic upon hearing the news. ‘Simply making the finals was such an amazing feat for our children, so second place is truly an astounding achievement! These four pupils have worked so hard, and their achievement is so well deserved.’

To celebrate this wonderful achievement, the children were treated to ice cream in Oxford city centre. Well done to our amazing mathletes!
