Empowered Parenting Course

Empowered Parenting Course: Apply Montessori methods at home

Bringing up a child can be the most amazingly rewarding experience. But it can often bring challenges and frustrations. Incorporating five modules, our Empowered Parenting course helps parents build a more understanding relationship with their child, and also support them in each stage of their childhood. The course has been referred to as a ‘revelation’ by our parents who have ‘noticed changes in one day’.

This course takes a child-centred, Montessori approach – and gives parents an insight into the fundamentals of how we work with children here at The Gower School. It is consistent with your child’s education and school life, and will also equip you with the tools to successfully apply the Montessori approach at home.

Led by Emma Gowers, the course outlines how children’s bodies and minds develop as they grow, the support they require at each age, and the most effective ways that adults can offer it.

Additionally, the course explains how children develop in the major areas of language, maths, creativity and behaviour, and will help parents create a seamless transition from nursery to primary school.

Furthermore, you will learn simple and practical ways of living with children, and positive language tools for adults to use in everyday situations to reduce stress. Empowered Parenting is the ideal place to discuss specific challenges of individual children in an understanding and supportive environment, and also develop strategies to address them.

Autumn Term 2024 Course

Our next Empowered Parenting Course will run over five evening sessions, and the course will cover:

The secrets of child development – Core principles of the developing child and what you can do practically to support them.

Behaviour – How to positively manage and guide your child’s behaviour for the best.

Language development and the basics of literacy – The foundations that underpin all language and reading, preparing your child for school.

Number development and the basics of maths – Creating a love of and ease with numbers.

Montessori at Home alongside Creativity – Setting free your child’s inner artist. Tips and tools for setting up, maintaining and developing your Montessori home.

Each module will have information, discussion, practice and application. Your child will be the main focus, with the aim being to empower you as a parent to give you the skills, insight and reassurance that you need so that you can give your child the support they deserve.

Here is what parents have said about Empowered Parenting…

‘This is such an important course. When you’re at the coalface of parenting all day, every day it feels hard to take time out to (effectively) study the thing you are doing 24/7. However, the benefits are manifold, and the perspective I gained from ‘Empowered Parenting’ is literally a game changer. I can’t recommend this time enough. The books and the conversation between parents and the shared experience were so supportive and grounding. What other job would you go in to with minimal experience, and no training? Why should parenting be any different? This is a chance to up-skill but also to de-stress, because there are experts out there who can help you have calm days and positive interactions. If you have the chance to do it, do this course.’

‘I’m just getting in touch to say that I found the recent Empowered Parenting Course really useful and interesting – invaluable really. Thanks to you all, especially Emma, for putting it on.’

‘This is just to thank you for the very inspiring course. I enjoyed it very much and I learned a lot from everybody.’

‘Thank you for running the course – I enjoyed it very much. Parenting is seldom easy and I have benefitted from yourself and all the other parents on the course who shared their views. I think the biggest learning point for me was the use of positive language and staying calm. I have been empowered in the sense that I can now see where I was going wrong to some extent and how I can use the techniques I’ve learned to do things better. Hopefully, I will carry on all the things that I’ve learned from the course and the booklet will be a great help and something that I can dip into to remind me of the things I should be doing. Thanks again!’

‘Gaining insight into the way children think and how they relate to concepts like time and sharing was eye-opening and absolutely changed the way we are with them. It also meant far fewer fights as we are able to engage on a level that is far more likely to be received and understood. Other things that stayed with me were the importance of positive reinforcement and engagement with the children, the need for repetition and consistency, and making time to work on numbers and not just letters and reading. I think about the course a lot and would highly recommend it to any parent.’

‘Emma Gowers’ Empowering Parenting course is the best course or book I could recommend to any parents of babies and/or toddlers. This course really opened my eyes. Motherhood and fatherhood comes naturally to parents but parenting can be challenging at times. This course made me realise what I needed to change to improve my parenting skills. One of the things that sticks with me the most is that you need to treat your child like a mini adult – in that you have to believe he/she can do “it”. They want to learn at their own pace and when they want help they’ll ask for it. Children are creative and if we interfere too much we narrow this creativity. Also make sure you have a child-friendly environment that allows them to do things. It is much harder for them to attempt something in an environment made for adults.’

‘My husband and I participated in the New and Expectant Parents workshop and found it to be a valuable course to take part in. The topics covered everything from communication to independence, and were a fantastic and helpful way to further understand infant and child development. The materials were presented in a way that was accessible for all who participated. Due to the discussion based format of the workshop, it was beneficial to hear other people’s views and have a dialogue about the topics raised. I recommend this course for all prospective parents and for current parents, as it provides valuable information while also refreshing your existing knowledge and understanding.’
