15th November 23
On Wednesday 8th November eight eloquent pupils from Forms 5 and 6’s Debating Society travelled to South Hampstead High School to take part in their second annual Junior Debating Competition. Over 160 pupils from 21 London independent schools arrived to express themselves in a fun and competitive environment.
Across the competition our two teams took part in 6 debates using the 3-a-side format that they had practised in their club. The children thoroughly enjoyed arguing for the proposition and opposition, as well as making POIs (point of interest) and rebuttals.
The motions included:
We were delighted that the team TGS Tigers won two debates and team The Verbalists won one debate. Most importantly, the children had enormous amounts of fun!
Well done to to our well-spoken children for their well-thought out arguments.
As one of our most exciting club offerings for older children, our Debating Society provides essential speaking and rhetorical skills to young pupils. It helps them our children build confidence, develop critical thinking skills, and fosters collaboration and respect for their peers in a team environment. Through competitions such as these, our children learn to communicate confidently and effectively, think critically, and work together as a team.
Thanks to Miss Kennedy for running the Debating Society and getting the children so excited about debating – they had such a wonderful time!
