Form 5 Pupil wins National Shakespeare Competition

30th April 25

We’re excited to share that a Form 5 pupil at The Gower School has won First Place in the Independent Schools Association’s Shakespeare Monologue Competition, in the Original Monologue category.

The ten-year-old’s winning piece, Rosaline Capulet Revised, was both written and performed by the pupil. It reimagines the character of Rosaline from Romeo and Juliet in a clever and refreshing way. The performance stood out to the judge for its creativity and confidence, offering a fresh voice in Shakespeare’s world.

The competition was judged by Eloise Secker, a respected actor with experience at the Royal Shakespeare Company, Shakespeare’s Globe, and the BBC. She described the performance as “inventive, playful, and utterly brilliant.”

At The Gower School, we’re proud to support pupils in speech and drama. Lessons are led by four qualified LAMDA teachers and are popular with children aged six to eleven. Pupils work through the LAMDA syllabus, and last August, all 78 who took exams passed with either merit or distinction.

Principal Emma Gowers is a passionate proponent of performance arts education for children. “Public speaking, acting and performing changes a child’s life. I am so proud of Lucy’s huge achievement in winning this prestigious competition”
