On Wednesday 26th May, we celebrated our inaugural Founder’s Day and marked The Gower School’s 20th anniversary.
Both children and staff were encouraged to dress up as a character from a musical. We were amazed by all the fabulous and eye-catching costumes, representing a wide array of musicals, including ‘The Lion King’, ‘Oliver Twist’, ‘School of Rock’, ‘Cats’, ‘Aladdin’, ‘Peter Pan’, ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, ‘Grease’, ‘The Wizard of Oz’, and ‘Mary Poppins’ – who our Principal, Miss Gowers, chose to dress up as on the day!

As part of Islington Council’s People Friendly Streets Programme, Cynthia Street is closed to vehicles during morning drop-off times. We decided to make the most of our empty street by hosting a spectacular display from party planner extraordinaire Mr Twizzle and his wonderful team of entertainers, including jugglers, stilt walkers, and balloon artists! It was a feast for the senses, and the arriving children and parents were bewitched by the performances, lively music and bubble machine.
In lieu of their usual lessons, the children took part in creative and engaging drama, music, dance and art sessions with our specialist teachers. They also learned some circus skills of their own during outdoor workshops for each class group in Joseph Grimaldi Park. Mr Twizzle and his team taught them how to spin plates and use a diabolo, and it was fantastic to see the children having fun and pick up these abilities very quickly. The children also had the chance to get their faces painted and take photos in the special TGS photo booth!
Finally, Miss Gowers visited each class to admire their costumes, and delivered ice creams to each of the children, as well as cake at the end of the school day. The feedback we received from the children was glowing. One child said, ‘This day is so fun and amazing,’ while another told us, ‘This was my most favourite day at school ever. I wish every single day was like this.’
Thank you to our entire staff team for making such a big effort to ensure the day would be a huge success. Many mentioned that it was exactly the kind of joyous break from reality they needed after a difficult year. In particular, thank you to our specialist teachers Miss Sarah, Miss King, Miss Williams, and Miss Milli for running such exciting lessons throughout the day.
Perhaps most importantly, the day gave us a chance to feel like one connected school community again, after feeling so separated for so long. The atmosphere was electric, and the children made memories they will always treasure. After the many challenges of the last year, Founder’s Day was a well-deserved treat for the whole school!
