The Gower School will be hosting a one off parents talk during the evening of Thursday 6th October 2016, led by Online Safety and Social Media expert Jonathan Taylor MSc. He combines his previous undercover work and 15 years research into Online Behaviour to become an internationally recognised expert in the field of Online Risks and Danger.
Jonathan worked as a Covert Internet Investigator, within the Metropolitan Police Child Abuse Investigation Command for 10 years. He will be working with our primary school children from Year 1 upwards, as well as the primary staff in the afternoon, and then addressing our parent body in the evening. To keep up to date with this ever changing world, I highly recommend you attend this event.
Jonathan Taylor is a truly inspirational speaker. It is quite exciting that we have managed to secure him for one of his most popular talks – Internet Safety. He will look at:
- how our use of the internet has changed, resulting in a far more interactive internet existence
- will give you a far better understanding of internet usage and the dangers
- highlight how the social media landscape has changed
- he will talk about ‘Game Changers’ – the Tablet, and the rise and dangers of the mobile applications that allow for random interaction
Jonathan will also introduce the spectrum of vulnerability, the importance of identifying where a child sits on the spectrum from highly vulnerable to resilient, and how this compares to offline vulnerability. He will also inform parents of online risk – danger – harm, how everything is a risk but danger only occurs from user’s inappropriate online behaviour, which can quickly elevate to harm (Sexual, Physical or Emotional). He will explain how social media, websites, apps and technology can raise risk to danger and conclude with how we must engage with children and young people to better understand how they use social media and apps, to correctly advise how to stay safe, smart & keep a positive online presence.
Jonathan speaks to schools nationally and internationally, and helps parents, foster carers and teachers understand the risks that lurk online, giving simple tools that can be used to help protect their children in the online world. Jonathan uses past investigations and research to highlight the issues. Jonathan regularly appears on BBC Breakfast TV, Sky News and ITV’s This Morning as TV’s Internet Safety Consultant.
This event will be held at Lift on White Lion Street on Thursday 6th October 2016.
